America (fashion in context)
To start they talk about fashion saying it's rooted in practicality, from the prairie dress
of the west to the preppy style of the east coast to the casual chic of california. It's said there are many regional nuances to American fashion which makes it difficult to accurately define and even more powerful in its influence. Preppy and collegiate fashion based on popular opinion is an American staple and large influence in global fashion.
Interesting research suggests preppy fashion has been around in America since the early 1890s/1900s, all the way through to the 90s and current day with those supposed influences showing through in the khakis and sweater of the 90s making a comeback in current fashion trends. A particular favourite in preppy fashion would easily be the 1950s as research suggests, largely because of a
very popular and timeless movie called grease which was fully of little knit cardigans and poodle skirts, twin sets and at the same time popularising plaid which in todays fashion climate is highly synonymous with preppy fashion and a closet staple for most. New age preppy fashion is arguably better than most other renditions.
A favourite example would be the wardrobe from clueless with the matching twin plaid sets on both the main character and her friend or a current popular favourite would be the brand diesel which many would look at and think preppy. Diesel is most definitely influenced by the idea of preppy fashion with their button up shirts, the matching minimal accessories, the mini skirts and just in general outfit shapes and silhouettes, diesel is in public opinion a very exciting and innovative brand when it comes to the preppy aesthetic. It's interesting to see them incorporate staples into their pieces whether it be a silhouette or a particular fabric,pattern, etc. Preppy fashion had such a large influence on tik tok creating a whole new fashion trend/category being ballet core, this started on tiktok and made its way into large labels like miu miu and molly goddard, etc.
A big part of American culture as well as their fashion culture is the Met Gala which is a premier fashion event celebrating the opening of the costume institute's annual exhibition. The Met gala is an integral part of American fashion , the event showcases innovative designs and themes usually to do with the red carpet and celebrities usually have to dress in regards to the theme and in popular opinion many usually miss the mark regardless this doesn't affect the actual importance of the event itself. Overall american fashion is an incredibly varied and has many fashion genres of which they are influenced by and influenced as previously mentioned in regards to ballet core,as well as a highly influential piece of american fashion media know as the devil wears prada which is a brilliant fashion film starring an incredibly talented cast these are things that really show the diversity and powerful influence american fashion has in the world.
