Fashion in context part 1

21588413

So as you have gathered from the title this is all about context as in how society affected fashion and vice versa in the 1800's to the present day.

Today we spoke a lot about Thorstein Veblen, who he was what he did his beliefs and theories, it goes on lmao, from my understanding the basis of what he says is that there is a clear divide between classes (the rich and the not so rich sad for them right lmao) and how because the rich had money they could buy and throw garments away before they were even actually worn(conspicuous consumption) (in the sense that they wore it once maybe twice and then chucked or gave it away, usually to their servants and thats kinda iconic never wished i could be a servant before). AAAAnnnyways that was just one of his many outdated but still worryingly accurate points unfortunately for the environment it is now also easy for poorer people to over consume clothes ( just not clothes of particularly high value) due to fast fashion, there is however still in my opinion a clear divide in terms of class because i can usually see from looking at someone whether they actually have money or if they shopped on the cheaper side (mostly because i am guilty of overconsuming cheap horribly made fashion pieces.....i see you, get that look off your face its not a vibe this is a safe space..)

Among other things brought up while learning about Thornstein one of the points i learned being that the basis of most theories and the reason why what these theories were saying was being taken so seriously was because it was written by a man in a time where most things were dominated by men however i oppose that fact and choose to believe that as of the modern times fashion has become a womans world whether that is because of weird sexist stereotypes or not i take solace in the fact that most things fashion are geared towards woman correct me if im wrong though, i think the turning point for this hostile takeover was speared by the fact a woman by the name Valerie Steele wrote the first book joining fashion and eroticism which to the modern person seems quite obvious.

last thing i would like to introduce is my relationship with fashion as this blog entry is kind of a introduction in a way, basically fashion has always been one of my passions, i went from making dresses for my dolls to making dresses for this doll. fashion helps me be me it helps me stay strong in my identity and helps my body image and mental health. it allows me to portray things to the people around me i wouldn't be able to if i were without my unique sense of style and has allowed me to really flourish and frankly im quite proud of the fashion sense i have put together considering my whole family dress like they shop in tescos basics.

To finish off this very horribly written blog post I see where Thornstein comes from with some of the points he makes when speaking of his trickle down theory there is one part that i particularly agree with though and thats the 'native taste' part, we never met but apparently he knows of me because i might not be able to afford good quality or the latest fashions however i do know how to find good pieces and how to style them to make them great pieces, anyways slay
